Pipe Keeper Story

Pipe Keeper

The ceremonial pipe for many native american tribes holds great power. The pipe keeper is responsible to wield that power. In ancient times, when two tribes were warring on the battle field, if the pipe keeper of either tribe revealed the pipe, all fighting would stop because all respected the pipe. Then they could sit down and parlay.

This sculpture entitled, “Pipe Keeper”, may be small in size, but it carries a very powerful message. The pipe not only represents the need for peace, but also the need for respect. A universal respect that crosses borders, cultures, and peoples is why many refer to the pipe as the peace pipe today. In a sense, today we ourselves are all pipe keepers. In our everyday lives when we choose to respect others, it yields peace and thus it is as though we have wielded the power of the peace pipe!
